The Evolution of the Foundation

The Warfield Brothers Foundation is named for brothers Zack (1976-2011) and Justin (1975-2016) Warfield, and the mission is modeled in their image, and on their legacy. The Foundation is dedicated to the ideals of learning, achievement and community that Zack and Justin helped build and foster.

The WBF is proud to offer the following scholarships each year:

  • One $1,000 Warfield Brothers Foundation Scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior from Walkersville High School (MD), given through the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
  • Two-Three Warfield Brothers Foundation Scholarships (totaling $1,000 each student, per year), awarded to graduating students from the St Lawrence of Brindsi School (K-8) in the Watts section of Los Angeles, CA.

The Warfield Brothers Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit registered in California. It originated as the Zachary Warfield Scholarship Fund (est. 2011) to honor Zack, and evolved to the Warfield Brothers Foundation in 2016 to also honor Justin. Sales of shirts for the ZJ5K each year are the primary source of funding for the scholarships.

About Zack

Zack Warfield passed away on July 4th, 2011, at the age of 35. And if he was around today, he’d make sure to tell us that he was in good company; that’s the same day as Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, only 185 years later (and he’d do the math in his head).

Zack’s life was a remarkable combination of achievement and humility, and it is his example that guides the mission of the scholarship fund that bears his name. He was a proud graduate of Woodsboro Elementary School and Walkersville High School in Frederick, MD, which is why one of the scholarships is given annually to a Walkersville graduate. That student will go on to study science and engineering, since Zack held engineering and aerospace/aeronautics degrees from Notre Dame and MIT, and had a long and distinguished career in the science and intelligence communities.

Recipients of the scholarships also display more than scholastic aptitude; they exemplify athletic achievement and leadership. Zack was an outstanding athlete, an accomplished mountaineer (summiting Mont Blanc and Mount Rainer), as well as the founder of a successful consulting firm.

Service to his community and the greater good is what led to the creation of the second scholarship that bears Zack’s name, given to a deserving student from the Watts section of Los Angeles. Recipients of this scholarship are judged on both merit- and need-based crtieria; Zack was generous with his mind, his time and his talents, so allowing bright children to attend top schools fits perfectly with the way Zack lived his life, and, in turn, the mission of the scholarship fund.

Zack’s life resonated profoundly with those who knew him – the support for the Zack 5K is just one way that we try to remember him, honor his life, and build a lasting legacy. Thank you for being a part of something special!.

About Justin

Justin Warfield passed away on June 5th, 2017 at the age of 41, after a long battle with cancer.

A lifelong coach and educator, Justin was the co-founder and president of Beach Brothers Tutoring (BBT) in Manhattan Beach, personally tutoring students from elementary school through college in Math and Test Prep, while overseeing a staff that included subjects as diverse as Spanish, Economics, English, History and Chemistry. From humble beginnings as a traveling, in-home math tutor in 2002, BBT grew to be a trusted part of the educations of countless South Bay families.

In addition to his work at BBT, Justin taught summer programs at Stanford University, Pepperdine University and Johns Hopkins University and led the Manhattan Beach team of Mathletes that won the Westside/South Bay Los Angeles Regional MathCounts competition. Justin was founder and President of the Zachary G. Warfield Memorial Fund, which, through its sponsorship of the Zack 5K, funds scholarships supporting deserving students from The Friends of St. Lawrence-Watts (CA) Youth Center and Walkersville High School.

An accomplished athlete, Justin completed several marathons, including those in Los Angeles, New York, Honolulu, the Marine Corps Marathon and four Boston Marathons. Always seeking new challenges, Justin later added endurance events to his list of achievements, completing the JFK 50-Miler, the TransRockies run, and Ironman Arizona. He was a member of an elite South Bay riding group and was also a regular participant in local events such as the Manhattan Beach 10-K and the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim.

Justin will be remembered for his encyclopedic recall of sports trivia, his quest to find the perfect cup of coffee, his unquantifiable hoard of mustard and his dedication to music, particularly the Grateful Dead and The Boss. He’ll also be remembered as a trusted friend, respected teacher and a beloved son and brother.
